Workplace Ideas

Some companies are making moves to change the format of work in context of everyone’s lives. There may as well be no set times to work and play in some jobs. In IT and web design, much of what we do at home is “work”… and we do a lot of personal stuff at work. The two merge.

Got some ideas for things to help the two blend even more.

  1. Personal project time – a la 3M, Google et al. Staff are going to do what interests them, in or out of work so it may as well be encouraged.
  2. A quiet room, where you can get some headspace or have a nap, or chill out at lunchtime.
  3. Events – Similar to “Barcamp“, but primarily just getting local folks involved with your company. Maybe the employees of the future are just waiting to come and see you…
  4. Web seminars/training etc – It wouldn’t hurt anything to spread some knowledge around. It’s all on the internet anyway, so people may as well be coming to your company website for it. Some people will always mess around themselves, they would make crap customers anyway!
  5. Open source – Give some code or a bit of software away. Again, it’s great advertising and shows what we can do…
  6. Development blog/forum/news – Keep everyone up to date with what we are up to and get to know people. In a field where everyone can access the same skills, it will be the personality of the people that you are working with that will clinch a deal.
