Review: db Audio T-Rex 6.2c speakers
I have recently installed a set of db Audio 6.2c speakers into my Calibra front doors. The install process itself was a Herculean task, but that’s another story…
Not wanting to randomly buy some speakers online, I visited the Car Audio Centre in Hyson Green, Nottingham. As I have found with this shop before, most of the goods don’t have prices on. They ask you what you have seen it at. You tell them the website price and they go “Yeah, that’s web only prices, it is £more in the shop”. I asked for a set of Infinity components which I had seen on their website. Again, as many people have found with these guys they didn’t have any stock. What they did have however were lots of InPhase and db Audio stock. Hardly surprising, as these are their own brands. The shop used to be called InPhase Audio back in the day. So they tried to switch sell me onto db Audio.
These components were £300, way above my budget so I was about to leave, not wanting to spend £100 on InPhase speakers. At this point, after ignoring me for a while to speak to some wannabe gangster with gold teeth, the salesman offered me some db Audio B-stock at a massive reduction. A pair of the T-Rex were on demo in the shop and sounded sweet, so with the reduced price I went for them. So, dodgy advertising and sales tactics aside, I am now the proud owner of a gorgeous pair of speakers.
I have had a lot of speakers over the years, often worth more than the car they are installed in. I have a modest amp and an earthquake 12″ in the Calibra, so the front speakers would have a challenge. Once installed, I was blown away by the T-Rex 6.2c. The top end is crystal clear and very detailed even when played loud. The mids are smooth and refined. I have cut most of the bass out using the active crossover on my amp, because I don’t want the mid bass vibrating everything to bits in my doors. Overall, I am really pleased with the speakers. Well produced music sounds stunning. The build quality feels very good and it seems a shame to hide them behind the door panels. There were three different mounting options included with the tweeters – flush, flat surface and angled surface.
So in conclusion, I am really pleased with the speakers at the price I paid for them. I wouldn’t pay £300 for them as there are better speakers out there for that kind of money. The main point is – don’t go to the Car Audio Centre if you don’t know exactly what you want. They will try and sell you their own brands.
